A third-year student from IIT-Kharagpur was found dead inside his hostel room on January 12, an institute official reported. Shaon Malik, a student of Electrical Engineering, was discovered hanging by his parents, who had arrived to meet him on Sunday.
According to the official, Malik's parents and institute staff had to forcibly open the door after he failed to respond to multiple calls. Malik had spoken to his parents the previous evening, and "things seemed perfectly normal," the official added.
The institute has announced an internal investigation into the circumstances of the death and pledged to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. A senior police officer confirmed that the post-mortem examination was completed and recorded on video. The police are currently investigating the matter.
In a statement, IIT-Kharagpur expressed deep shock at the loss, describing Malik as an academically gifted student known for his intelligence and promising future in Electrical Engineering. "The institute is devastated by this tragic event," the statement read, adding that they are providing all necessary support to Malik’s family.
The institute also emphasized its commitment to student well-being, urging students to utilize available counseling and mental health resources. This incident follows the recent discovery of the body of a junior lab technician at the campus.
