The World Test Championship (WTC) finalists Australia opted to bat first in Galle and made 330/2 before rain forced the early stumps on the opening day. Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja scored tons and added unbeaten 195 runs for the fourth wicket. It was captain Smith's 35th Test ton which helped him surpass legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene and Younis Khan in the list of the most Test tons.
Travis Head opened the batting for the visitors as Smith stated in his pre-match press conference. He made 57 runs off just 40 balls to help the tourists give a flying start in the first innings.
